Make the NAS destination available
Choose an SMB share or an operating-system-mounted destination. VaultSync supports configured SMB auto-mounting on Windows and macOS, and pre-mounted paths on supported systems.
VaultSync / Practical guides
A NAS can be a useful destination for a desktop backup, but a reachable share and a completed copy are not the same thing as a tested recovery. VaultSync helps you define the source and destination, inspect backup history, and collect recovery evidence.
Step by step
Use VaultSync for folder-level backups to local storage, SMB shares, and supported pre-mounted NAS destinations, with verification and restore checks.
Choose an SMB share or an operating-system-mounted destination. VaultSync supports configured SMB auto-mounting on Windows and macOS, and pre-mounted paths on supported systems.
Register only the source folders you want to protect. Configure a manual or scheduled backup and select the appropriate destination or multiple destinations.
Check destination availability and backup status after disconnected or sleeping NAS events. A network target can become unavailable even when the configuration is correct.
Inspect restore points, use verification and guided restore tests when supported, and retain at least one independent recovery copy rather than relying on a single NAS.
Before you rely on it
VaultSync is not a NAS operating system or a server-side backup service. It runs on the machine that manages the selected folders.
Share permissions, credentials, mounts, and network reliability remain part of the underlying operating-system configuration.
NAS copies are not inherently offsite or immutable. Plan your 3-2-1 strategy separately and test restores.
Common questions
No. It works with destinations you control, including supported local and mounted network storage.
No. Mount an NFS share through macOS first, then configure VaultSync to use the pre-mounted path.
